Compression Springs
What are Compression Springs?
Compression springs are one of the most used spring types and have a distinctive helical shape. When subjected to pressure, these springs grow shorter and absorb mechanical energy. Once the load is removed or reduced, compression springs return to their original shape and length. This design makes them particularly suited to shock absorption, providing a ‘push’ movement when the spring resists compression. Other common types of spring including wave springs and die springs are classed as compression springs, so it’s an incredibly versatile type of spring.
Applications of Compression Springs
Compression springs play a vital role in many of the objects and systems we use daily, whether for business or personal use. For example, compression springs are found in everyday items such as computers, ballpoint pens, door locks, and many battery-powered devices where springs are required to hold batteries in place. They are also popular within a wide selection of industries including automotive, robotics, electronics, energy, and manufacturing. Compression springs exist within many areas of vehicles, including the seats, where they adapt to the body when seated. They are also found within some medical devices like inhalers and syringes, which use minuscule compression springs to function.
Compression Spring Materials
We advise selecting spring material based on the requirements of your application, considering aspects including temperature ranges, load weights, and the need for corrosion resistance. Our standard compression springs are manufactured using unalloyed steel, but we also offer stainless steel compression springs. This material is suited to marine environments, where exposure to water can be a concern for spring performance. To view the exact material used for the spring you’re interested in, please consult the individual product listing and downloadable product PDF.
Conical Compression Springs
In addition to standard and custom compression springs, we are also experts in creating conical compression springs. These springs are defined by each successive coil having a smaller diameter than the previous one, providing a distinctive cone-like shape. This allows the spring to compress fully, which is particularly helpful in situations where axial space is limited.
