Adjustable Gas Springs
What are Adjustable Gas Springs?
Adjustable gas springs, otherwise known as variable force gas springs, are a form of gas spring where a central rod extends into a sealed cylindrical container, which contains nitrogen gas and lubricating oil. They are favored for their ability to adjust the force exerted, helping in applications where the required pressure is unknown or varies.

Adjusting the Force of Variable Force Gas Springs
Our variable gas springs contain a pressure release valve that adjusts the force using an Allen key. When adjusting by turning the key anticlockwise, the pressure in the cylinder drops, which lowers the force. This process is then repeated until the desired resistance and support are achieved. The force is reduced by roughly 20-50N every second of venting, depending on the allocated range.
Adjustable gas springs should be handled with care, as they’re filled with compressed nitrogen. They should be protected from damage and never opened, modified, drilled, welded, or subjected to excessive heat. Depending on the application, gas spring protection tubes are also available to provide added protection.
Types of Adjustable Gas Springs
We supply variable force gas springs in a range of rod diameters, lengths, and force ranges. When it comes to materials, we offer adjustable steel springs with a powder-coated body, and stainless steel springs with a chrome-plated rod and body. The material chosen should reflect the application’s needs; for instance, marine applications may benefit from stainless steel adjustable gas springs. When choosing the force for your springs, take into consideration that the extended length will increase when adding end fittings. Our variable force springs are available with the following force ranges:
- 30-400N Force Range, 0.24IN Gas Springs
- 50-750N Force Range, 0.31N Gas Springs
- 70-1200N Force Range, 0.39IN Gas Springs
- 150-2500N Force Range, 0.55IN Gas Springs
- 300-5000N Force Range, 0.79IN Gas Springs
Applications of Variable Force Gas Springs
Adjustable Gas Springs have a diverse range of applications, from light-duty to heavy-duty use. They are found in various domestic products, like beds, cabinets, and car doors. They’re also in access hatches and doors, electrical control cabinets, and machine guards. Adjustable gas springs can be more compact than wire springs and operate in a similar way due to the compressed nitrogen, which makes them a popular choice of spring.
