Power Springs
Power springs are a flat type of spring, sometimes referred to as clock springs. They are created by winding tempered spring material on an arbor before attaching the free end to a case made from metal or plastic. Many different materials can be used to create power springs, and they’re stored in a case, barrel, keeper, or band. They offer a high torque delivery per unit of deflection with normal residual stress, and their compact shape makes them ideal for applications constrained by space.
Fitting a Power Spring
During installation, power springs need lubrication and coil separation in order to ensure its successful operation. Without lubrication, spring force can decrease by up to 20%, so it’s an integral part of the installation process. By positioning multiple springs adjacently, a greater torque can be achieved, with an intermediary washer placed between the springs for improved performance.
Power Spring Materials and Finishings
Our springs are equipped with a protective ring or nylon band meant for removal during assembly. Handle the spring carefully and employ a fitting tool for holding during housing position. Here are examples of some of the relevant specifications:
- Stainless steel used is: EN 10151 1.4310
- Torque represented is nominal, exclusive of friction effects
- A correspondence of 1 kp equates to 9.80665 Newtons, and a Newton is equal to 0.10197 kp
Applications of Power Springs
Power springs are flat-coiled springs that can be found in a range of applications, such as in car seatbelts. Retractable dog leashes, hoses, and point-of-purchase security all utilize power springs, relying on the long lifecycle and pre-stressed elements of these components for reliable performance. Within the construction industry, they appear frequently, such as in cables, hoses, webbing, rope retractors, tape measures and other length-measuring devices.
