Wave Springs
Plymouth Spring presents an extensive selection of wave spring designs, ideal for various requirements. As front-runners in wave spring manufacturing, our wave springs are engineered using unalloyed spring steel and stainless steel, tailored to align with the specifications of your project.
What Is a Wave Spring?
Wave springs are a unique compression spring variant, fashioned from flat wire. Their distinctive title comes from the characteristic multiple waves within each turn.
The combination of flat wire and multiple waves offers the equivalence of spring force at diminished work heights, comparable with round wire coil springs. Our multi-coil wave springs, made from flat spring material, are perfectly suited for applications necessitating a low mounting dimension.
A wave spring's total length and working height are less than conventional round wire springs, permitting a 50% shrink in mounting dimensions. This property of wave springs renders them ideal for constrained radial and axial spaces. Moreover, given that they are often smaller and utilize less material for production, opting for wave springs instead of other wire spring types can be cost-effective. Below are specifications relevant to our wave spring manufacturing:
Legend:
- R= Spring Rate
Material and Finishings
- Unalloyed spring steel: CK67 (1.1231)
- Maximum operational temperature: 120° C
- Stainless spring steel: EN 10270-3-1.4310
- Maximum operational temperature: 250° C
Single kp corresponds to 9.80665 Newtons, while a Newton equals 0.10197 kp. The outer diameter does not exceed the specified H.D. value at full compression while the inner diameter doesn't exceed the specified R.D. value at full compression.
The minimum load length 'Ln' is applicable to dynamically loaded springs working at temperatures up to approximately 40°C for unalloyed spring steel and 120°C for stainless spring steel. At elevated operational temperatures, the spring should not bear loads as much as Ln.
Common Applications of Wave Springs
Wave springs serve as a dependable space-saving solution for a myriad of applications, from small to large diameters and light to heavy loads. They are ubiquitously used in everyday items like smartwatches, crucial medical devices, and robotic surgical tools.
Wave springs can be found in connectors, clutches, valves, and pumps, demonstrating their suitability for both static and dynamic load applications. For dynamic load applications, it is vital to consider the spring fatigue and ensure a relatively harder wave spring is employed.
